about amanda katz
Amanda, born in Cape Town in 1960, is a recently retired architect with a 40-year career leading her own firm. Throughout her professional life, she maintained a deep passion for art, using drawing and painting as a refuge. Her artistic journey began at the Frank Joubert Art Centre and continued through her architecture studies, where she developed her skills in life drawing. She further refined her techniques in watercolour under the guidance of artist Inge Semple and continues to explore various media with artists Paul Birchall and Jill Joubert.
Her artwork, inspired by the iconic Lion’s Head mountain and the Cape’s floral kingdom, has gained recognition among collectors worldwide, with pieces in cities like Cape Town, London, Oslo and Geneva. For Amanda, painting is a meditative practice that connects her to the landscapes she loves. She captures the contrasts of Lion’s Head—peace and wildness, stability and chaos—through watercolours, inks, acrylics, and charcoal, exploring themes of solidity and impermanence.
Her paintings resonate with viewers, offering a connection to Cape Town and the inner stillness the mountain inspires. In Amanda’s work, art and nature are intertwined, reflecting a lifelong dialogue between the solid and the fleeting, the familiar and the mysterious.
